THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SPIN

A tiny museum.
An enormous perspective.

Look beneath the wings. Trace an antenna. Compare the tools insects use to live in their worlds.

What am I looking at?

Scientific scans use photographs or scans of real specimens. A “3D reference” has an unconfirmed creation method. Artist models are labelled separately and can simplify or invent anatomy. Fossils are a separate reference type. Several models may represent the same species, body part or life stage.

Can I download and use the models?

726 records offered downloads when checked on 20 October 2026. Sketchfab may require a free account. 4 Smithsonian records also have direct public-domain downloads. Follow the creator’s current licence: some prohibit commercial use or sharing modified versions. The inspector includes credits to copy.

Does “Victorian atlas match” mean it was scanned here?

No. It means the model’s species name matches a name with Victorian records in our field atlas. The scanned specimen may come from anywhere. An absent match is not evidence that a species is absent from Victoria.

How accurate are the scans?

Photogrammetry can leave holes, distort colours or miss antennae, hairs and thin wings. CT scans can show different structures from surface scans. Not every model is to scale or suitable for identification, measurement or 3D printing. Inspect the creator’s notes.

Sources, privacy & saved models

The catalogue includes public metadata from DiNArDa, Economolab, Yale Peabody Museum, ETAIN and individual creators on Sketchfab, plus Smithsonian Open Access where available. Models stream from their original provider only when opened. Thumbnails load while browsing. Saved favourites stay in this browser and are separate from your Fielddex.
